- Per Tim Gilbert
The #13100-13299 series was a standard MDT design using the USRA double-sheathed box car design's massive fishbelly steel underframe. Bought to carry bananas from the port of Boston to Northern New England and Eastern Canada, the cars became surplus when Boston ceased being a port of call for the banana boats in the late 1930s. Much of their loadings afterwards were company ice. This underframe design provided the Santa Fe with the base to upgrade their "USRA" reefers periodically into the 1950s with eventually steel sides. On the B&M, however, there was little need to own reefers so the #13100s maintained their wood ends until retirement. Their prime purpose was to carry bananas and Florida citrus landed in the port of Boston inland. Thus, they rarely strayed far from the B&M. They were not equipped for re-icing when loaded.
In the 1930s [1934], 90 of these reefers were upgraded with 4½" high floor boards to improve air circulation. This reduced their cubic capacity for carrying produce from 2086 [cubic] feet to 1984. During the 1930s, some of the cars were assigned to the diminished ice business out of Greenfield, NH. Around 1940 [1937?] , 16 of these cars were renumbered into the #1852-1869 passenger milk service [series], with [ice bunkers removed and] upgraded trucks. After retirement, some cars were placed in stationary Company Ice Service in Boston, Mechanicville, and White River Junction.
- [KGA] Assuming the 90 cars were the "13100-13224 Note A" cars, and the "13225-13299" cars, I'm not sure why the ½" difference in inside height between those two groups. And why that difference didn't show up in the cubic capacity (given the inside length and width, it should be about 11 cu. ft. difference in capacity).

NOTE: once cars get renumbered into "company service" (zero + number, or W/M/S numbers), the following actions are my "best guess" as to what happened to the car (due to gaps in records, and the re-use of numbers)Assigned Locations: Per Tim Gilbert in the B&MRRHS Modelers Notes #85 (Jul-Aug 2003), the "Location 1" column is the same as the assigned location for ice storage
