- Conversions of 81000 series Gondolas in 1929
- Per Tim Gilbert
Most pulpwood loads in New England before the 1960s were carried in boxcars. Some loads were also carried in otherwise idle stock cars. To facilitate overhead loading, obsolete boxcars had their roofs sheared off. Flat cars were converted with sides, doors and ends making them resemble open-top stock cars. To hold the top together, tie-rods were installed. These tie rods could become quite battered when the overhead loaders missed more than occasionally. Even after "mechanized" side loading was utilized, cars having doors remained in use in the pulpwood trade. Unloading all of these cars was labor-intensive, but no New England mills were capable of unloading from overhead by a crane, etc. until 1954 when a few mills began to convert to this unloading mode.At the turn of the century, the B&M had two different series of "racks" - the first, conversions in the 1890s of 30' WUF flat cars built a decade earlier, and the second being 300 34' IL, 1,911 cu. ft. "bark racks" purpose-built mostly by Keith and ACF. The 30' racks were retired by 1921 and the 34' ones by the end of 1926. In 1929, one hundred of the 40' #81000 series all-steel gons built in 1913-1914 were converted and numbered in the #29000-29099 series. The #81000's 32 inside stake pockets must have been handy for supporting the nine per side 4x4 posts.
These conversions entered service in 1929, and were retired by 1950 [see above] operating mostly out of the Woodsville [NH] area. The #81000 gondolas were probably chosen as the "convertee" on account of the 16 inside fixed stake pockets [per side]. Overhead loading contributed to mangling of the tie rods.

Page numbers refer to pages in PDF file(s) (L/R = Left or Right side of that PDF page)
NOTE: once cars get renumbered into "company service" (zero + number, or W/M/S numbers), the following actions are my "best guess" as to what happened to the car (due to gaps in records, and the re-use of numbers)
