- Steel underframe Hart Convertible gondola/hopper
- Per Tim Gilbert
In contrast to the wood underframe designs acquired in 1091-1902 and 1907, the #9100-9199 series had steel underframes and the doors opened to the side of the rails which [was] more in tune with ordinary ballast hoppers. In all, there were twelve doors, six to a side or one per section excluding the sections at the ends. Each door had a chain attached to a rod running the length of the six sections. This chain prevented the door from opening far enough to foul either the track or trucks. This scheme made these cars more attractive in MOW ballast service than the earlier wood underframe designs.Throughout their lives, they were listed in the ORERs for probably the same reason as the other two convertible series. Their shop cards were kept by the MOW Department. Early on, the #9100s were designated as "GD" defined in 1925 as "an open top car having side dump arrangements, and having sufficient strength to carry its marked capacity in bituminous coal". By 1930, the B&M dropped all pretensions of these cars ever fitting any Mechanical Desgination definition. The ORERs showed this column empty. Many other roads which had "Hart Convertible" [cars] deignated them as "MWB". Perhaps that wise soul who decided to change the "MWB" designation of the two earlier series should not have. It would have avoided some confusion.
The last #9100 series cars were retired in 1955.
- For examples of how the car could be configured, I believe these photos could be "close" to the B&M cars' configuration.
From the John W. Barriger III National Railroad Library "Flickr" page - American Car and Foundry Collection (Flickr album)C&NW 13075 - Side view - all "closed up"
C&NW 13075 - Top/End view - dumping outside the rails (gondola configuration)
C&NW 13075 - Top/End view - dumping inside the rails (hopper configuration) - Note end has been moved in, but one board and frame still in original position
L&A 6025 - Top/End view - dumping inside the rails (hopper configuration) - Note end has been moved in, but top and bottom boards and frame still in original position
L&A 6025 - Side view - dumping outside the rails (gondola configuration) - Note lack of small side door (in last side panel) that C&NW had
4 photos of CStPM&O 50387 on this page (near the bottom of the page) - another variation, more similar to the C&NW car
5 photos of Interstate 707 on this page (about the middle of the page) - another variation, different from all the above...(I hesitated to include)
- I believe This US patent (from https://patents.google.com/patent/US1198725A, although probably also available at the US Patent Office site and other places) describes this car's operation and (in a general sense) construction.

NOTE: once cars get renumbered into "company service" (zero + number, or W/M/S numbers), the following actions are my "best guess" as to what happened to the car (due to gaps in records, and the re-use of numbers)
