- 42' "USRA design" flat car
- Per Tim Gilbert
The 300 flatcars in the #33500-33799 series were built by Magor in 1923 to a design developed by the USRA. After the #33000s were retired, they were the only general service flats that the B&M owned until 1957. The cars were given a nominal capacity of 55 tons instead of the more normal 50 tons associated with trucks having 5½" x 10" journals. When built in 1923 before the load limit became a stencilled requirement in 1925, this five ton difference mattered. Before 1925, the effective load limit was 110% of the nominal capacity thus, with 55 ton capacity, the #33500s could carry 121,000 pounds instead of 110,000 pounds legislated by the 50 ton "capacity". The 121,000 pounds was still well under the calculated load limit of 131,700 pounds so there was no cause to suspect failures due to too much weight. These #33500 cars were well travelled. In early 1949, #33509 left the B&M loaded. In 1950, #33509 was the last B&M freight car equipped with KD brakes and the ICC mandated their replacement with ABs. The problem for the B&M was to get #33509 back home to do the replacement. #33509 was yo-yoing around the midwest carrying loads originated on other roads. Once, it got back to the New Haven where it was reloaded and sent out west. Finally, in July, 1951, the B&M asked the Missouri Pacific to send #33509 home unloaded with which the MP complied. The routing was the NYC via Rotterdam Junction, and the NYC complied also by not reloading. At last, the #33509 got back to the B&M's control on August 5, 1951, and was sent to East Deerfield, where AB brakes were installed.
During the 1950s, some of the #33500s were destroyed on the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern, Erie, Frisco, Illinois Central, Louisville & Nashville, Milwaukee Road, National RR of Mexico, Pennsylvania, Rock Island, Southern Pacific, and Texas & New Orleans. These wrecks as well as the #33509's saga are an indication that the #33500s were part of a national general service flatcar pool similar to the general service boxcar pool mentioned on page 1 [of Tim's original document]. Accordingly, both general service boxcars and flatcars owned by one road could be loaded by another road for a consignee on a third road. It was, therefore, conceivable that any general service boxcar or flatcar could appear on any other road regardless of considerations for ownership, originating, or terminating road.
In 1954 [showing up in the 1/1955 ORER] ten of them were provided with 6'-6" high bulkheads for gypsum board loading out of Newington, NH:
[Tim does not mention if these modified cars had their bulkheads removed and were returned to "normal" service, or if they were retired "as is" with bulheads in place]

Two ended up on the Maine Central where they were converted to pulpwood racks which resembled open-top stock cars. Other retirees hung around in B&M MOW service for quite a while.
