While the ORERs, at least initially, treat these as one series (71000-72999) it was actually composed of 5 different groups of cars. The most obvious distinguishing features were the sides (single sheath vs. all steel), the door, and the reporting marks. (more detailed differences can be found below):In addition, quite a few were sold/leased back by the B&M, and others were sold off to other railroads (see renumberings/conversions).

Discussion, General Notes
- I believe this is the only car series where the MTC car numbers were called out differently than the "overall" car numbers for the class of cars.
- I'm not sure what to call the original 3 panel doors. I believe Harry Frye (B&RRHS historian) originally coined the term "reverse Creco", but I've never understood it, as they aren't "reverse" of a Creco door (the ribs & panels stick in & out just like a Creco door [e.g. see PRR X-29 cars]) and (to the best of my recollection) nobody knows who made them (probably NOT Creco). I left Tim's commentary "as is", but most everywhere else I replaced it with "3 panel" (or maybe I should use "ARA"?)
Note CGW also had doors sometimes called "reverse Creco", but they are a different design than the B&M doors (and probably should not be called "reverse Creco" either).
Railway Prototype Cyclopedia #18 refers to these as "Steel clad wood doors".
- Per Tim Gilbert
The 1975 single sheathed cars were one of the few examples where [a] Pratt truss was used for diagonal bracing. The resulting tension was more suitable for steel underframe cars than the Howe truss whose compression was more suitable for wood. Other railroads using the Pratt truss for steel underframe cars were the Bangor & Aroostook and the Seaboard Air Line. When the "Reverse Creco" doors of the #71000-#71999 cars were replaced with Youngstown doors, the ARA door hardware was retained. This hardware contained seven guides for the door along the side sill, and was different than the #72000-72999's hardware which had only 5 [actually, 4]. This spotting difference remained even after the 1955 renumbering. The replacement of the Reverse Creco doors began after World War II; why the B&M purchased the Reverse Creco doors for the #71000's in 1929-1930 is a matter of speculation. No photo has been found showing an all-steel #71975 or #71996 series with the replacement Youngstown doors. A photo has surfaced showing that an all-steel boxcar in the renumbered #70988-70999 series with a Youngstown door. This leads to an assumption that all the #71000's which were renumbered into the #69700-70999 series after their sale-leaseback had Youngstown doors - the replacement done either in the post-war period or when the cars were sold and refurbished.
In 1955, many of the surviving wood sheathed cars were renumbered into the #69700-70987 series. Twelve of the steel sheathed cars were renumbered into the #70988-70999 series at the same time. This series [#69700-70999] had three different leases:
[see table below in "Renumberings/Conversions/Dispositions"]In 1945, 15 of the cars were converted to stock cars with slatted sides (Lot 55A) and numbered into the #27500-27514 series. Roofs, ends & doors remained "as built". By 1955, when stock cars were no longer required, the slatted sides of the surviving cars were replaced with boxcar sheathing.
[see table in #27500 series stock cars page for specific cars numbers involved]100 of the cars were sold in 1954 to the Fort Dodge, Des Moines & Southern, which numbered them in their #10000-10099 series.
Starting in 1958, 590 of the cars were sold to the Wellsville, Addison & Galeton which numbered them as their #5000-5340 and #6001-6251.- All-steel cards *in original number series* retained original doors until cars were scrapped, or rebuilt (as far as we know)
- In 1954, the total number of cars doesn't reflect sale of 100 cars to FtDDM&S. By 1956, total number of cars has "room" for this sale.
I don't know if there was just a time lag in paperwork, or delivering the cars to the FtDDM&S, or what...- To re-iterate from Tim: If there are 7 door "supports" at bottom of door, those are the original 71000 series cars (originally, 3 panel door)
If there are only 4 supports, those are the original 72000 series cars (originally Youngstown door)
The number of supports/guides did not change if/when door was replaced.- Per Railway Age (Aug 13, 1927, p291) and/or B&MRRHS Newsletter (Nov-Dec 2000 issue, p6)
MTC #71997 and 71998 were renumbered into 70997 and 70996 respectively as a result of the 1956 deal with Hyman Michaels- Posted in the "realstmfc.groups.io" list by Ron Christensen, 17-Jan-2022 (in thread "Fort Dodge Des Moines and Southern")

- Car details
One detail that I was just made aware of (thanks to posts in main@RealSTMFC.groups.io)...
On the 72000 series cars only (from what I've seen, NOT 71000 series cars that had replacement Youngstown doors) the top rib ended short of the (vertical) end ribs of the door, with a flat area where the door hardware was attached (image extracted from builder's photo of 72000 above):
As opposed to the replacement doors for the 71000 series cars (detail from photo of 71585 on NMRA Archives).
Note how top rib is continuous between the vertical ribs, and the door hardware wraps over it:

- As delivered
- maroon, rectangular herald
Only the first 1000 (71000-71999)(?see below?) cars had "frown" "MINUTE MAN SERVICE" under herald
This was in similar font as 8000 series hoppers "smiling" "MINUTE MAN SERVICE" under the herald, and on the side of a couple "special paint scheme" Pacific locos. This font also resurfaces in the B&M RR Magazine - e.g. back cover of Jul-Aug 1956 (vol 24 #4) issue.
Per Earl Tuson, perhaps only the first 300-500(?) cars got the "MINUTE MAN SERVICE" slogan
Note originally the road abbreviation was split by the diagonal: "|B&\M" (vertical "rib", the characters "B&", diagonal rib, then "M")- Per Earl Tuson, "Early 1930s"
- Reporting marks "squashed" to fit between the ribs: "|B&M\" (vertical "rib", the characters "B&M", diagonal rib)
- Unknown dates/eras/paint shops (pointed out by Dave Parker)
- There were at least 2 versions of the rectangular herald used on these cars. The difference is primarily in the shape of the "O"s and the "S" in "Boston"
Originally these were rather "rounded" (see builder's photos above)
Later, at least in some cases, it appeared more like the "K-10" font used for signs - more "squared off" with filleted corners. (see picture of 72074, repack date 7-1936 in Culotta, Ted. Focus on Freight Cars volume 9: Single sheath box & automobile cars 2, 2017)References or other data

General article on signature cars, one short segment on the B&M 71000 series cars.- The PULLMAN LIBRARY at Illinois Railway Museum file "All drawings.pdf" (or "All_Drawings.xls") indicates these drawings exist.
This data was extracted Jan, 2021. More drawings for these cars may have been scanned since then (and/or I may have missed some in the file), so I do NOT guarantee this is a complete list.
I have not seen these drawings, and am ASSUMING they are for these cars.
I am assuming the "975 cars" are for 71000-71974 (B&M and MTC Single sheathed), and "25 cars" are for 71975-71999 (B&M and MTC all-steel, "SS" = Steel sheathed?)
and "1000 cars" are common to the whole 71000-71999 series.

(or, if you can find them, the Sunshine Models Duryea underframe castings parts set.)per http://www.steamerafreightcars.com, the extra door guides can be modeled using parts from Grandt Line's Camel doors
(also from that web site) The cars rode on ARA Type Y trucks that can be represented quite nicely with RC's PRR trucks.More modeling information can be found on James B. Van Bokkelen's web site:
