ORER History
These cars were listed under the general GAEX reporting marks, nothing specific to the B&M
- Leased in 1950 for (supposedly) 10 years. Unknown if the lease actually lasted that long. (Per B&MRRHS article - see below)
- GAEX (General American - Evans [Products] cars - GA 50' sliding door boxcars with Evans "DF" load restraints.
In the ORERs, it is not obvious if any cars are leased to the B&M (there is no matching car series in the B&M listing, 1950-1953, and the 1/1953 GAEX listing does not specify any lessees).
It does not appear that the B&M purchased the cars after the lease expired (assuming the B&M actually leased the cars for the full 10 years)- Per B&M Annual reports to the ICC, It appears these cars show up in the "Installed during Year" - "Leased from others" - "Used Units" column for 1950
IN 1951, 10 cars show up in the "Retired from service during year" - "Returned to Lessors" - "Not known to have been permanently withdrawn for sale or demolition" column
I am speculating (as the numbers match, and there is no other obvious record of their return) they are the same cars, i.e. the lease was terminated after (nominally) 1 year.
These cars MAY have been re-leased to the PRR - per Han Steenwijk post in https://groups.io/g/BM-RR/message/38850:In 1950 the PRR was reported to lease 100 cars, see, for instance Railway Age, May 27, 1950, pp. 51-52) (https://archive.org/details/sim_railway-age_1950-05-27_128_21/page/51/mode/1up).
(Also note the name of Fairman R. Dick in that article, who was a director of the B&M at the time.)But a web page dedicated to the PRR’s GAEX cars (http://prr.railfan.net/freight/classpage.html?class=GAEX), and several other sources as well,
state that the first batch of GAEX cars covered the 100000-100109 number series. Maybe the balance was made up by the 10 cars the B&M had returned early.
