The Maine Central purchased (on their own) 150 hoppers (series #3700-3849) of this exact design from Bethlehem in 1936. In 1941, the B&M and MEC split a 200 hopper order down the middle - the MEC #3850-3949 and the B&M's #7100-#7199 series. In June, 1955, 64 of the B&Ms #7100s were leased to the Norfolk Southern (original, and formerly run by the B&M's 1955 "new" management, which received an ICC reprimand for its treatment of the NS) which merely added a "1" to the B&M number. The Norfolk Southern did not go in for gaudy schemes. They may have learned something.- 2 bay offset-side design (9 rib / 10 panel)
