Discussion, General Notes

• Per NEB&W Guide IV

  In 1979 a black Gothic herald with the name spelled out was first used. In the May, 2000 Railmodel Journal there was a Jim Eager photo of no 79097, an exterior post box car (nos 79000-79099) built by Pullman in March, 1979 (a 13 panel car if you count the door as a "panel" - the new Athearn kit no 5800). It was light blue with a light colored (galvanized?) roof, a black door, and white lettering..."

  Boston & Maine was one of the few roads that got 5344s [cu. ft.] with Pullman's ribbed door. This top view shows off Pullman's flat roof with a single raised rib in each panel that is much broader than Pullman's earlier PS-1 "bow-tie" rib

• Per Mike Clements email 24-Feb-2022, these cars were retired in 2011

  Of note to modelers, the following statement (p20):

  ...keep and maintain plainly, distinctly, permanently and conspicuously marked on each side of each unit, in letters not less than 1 inch in height, the words

  Ownership subject to documents filed under the Interstate Commerce Act

  [further down] indicates cars will be built at Bessemer, Alabama plant, lot and specification 1018
  It also indicates 200 cars (possibly this lot if for more than 1 railroad? or the B&M changed quantity at some point?)

Not exactly the same car (model is 5077 Cu Ft. car, B&M car is 5344/5315), and there are a bunch of differences (roofs, ends, IH = 11'-1" (B&M) vs 10'-7" (this model), and possibly underframe & brake details. But they do model the PS "Embossed" door that these were delivered with, and one variant has the correct number of ribs on the side. See this web page for more details
